Endowed Chairs 2017

E stablished in 1961, the Department of Chemistry of Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has trained a total of more than 3,000 chemistry graduates. They play key roles and excel in a variety of sectors ranging from education, research, chemical testing, environmental technology, chemical industry and food to biotechnology, contributing to the development of industry and the overall well-being of society. Moreover, the quality research work produced by members of the Department has secured numerous awards, research grants and publications in internationally renowned journals. The Department’s Analytical Chemistry has always been at the forefront of international academia and is regarded as the best among similar local programmes. Also, HKBU is the rst and only public-funded university that offers a programme providing quali ed practitioners for the Testing and Certi cation Industry in Hong Kong. To advance the University’s academic standards and stature, as well as to make an impact on the community through knowledge transfer, the Baptist Chemists, an HKBU alumni association, initiated the move to establish an Endowed Chair of Chemistry in the name of Dr. Mok Man Hung (1943 – 2015), a former Vice-President (Administration) and Council Secretary, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Head of the Department of Chemistry at HKBU. Alumni from the Department of Chemistry have done their utmost to raise funds for this Endowed Chair in order to acknowledge Dr. Mok’s contributions over the years and to continue his vision of promoting the sustainable research development of the University. The University also hoped that the establishment of the Endowed Chair of Chemistry will help in the recruitment and retention of the highest-quality scholars and also nance research to advance the frontiers of knowledge for the bene ts of the wider community.
