School of Chinese Medicine Qinghai Service-learning Tour

13 February 2020

With financial support from various donors, the School of Chinese Medicine has organised a Qinghai service-learning tour during summer since 2015. During the tour, students visited charity and welfare organisations in Qinghai Province, examined elderly and underprivileged patients suffering from bone and joint diseases as well as young patients with cerebral palsy, and provided medical advice for them under teachers’ guidance. They also taught local healthcare workers basic Chinese medicine knowledge so that they may continue the provision of Chinese healthcare services to those in need.

Since its launch in 2015, this service-learning project in Qinghai has received rapturous acclaim. It has provided students with ample opportunities to deal with real cases of illness so as to enrich their clinical experience and to enable them to understand the importance of good communication with patients.

“Through this meaningful initiative, I was able to see a wider world and to learn outside of the classroom. For example, I could communicate with patients directly and have hands-on experience of acupuncture. More importantly, this programme has taught me how to be a kind, sincere and helpful Chinese medicine practitioner.”
