In Memoriam: Dr. the Hon. Arnaldo de Oliveira Sales
The HKBU Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Dr. the Hon. Arnaldo de Oliveira Sales, GBM, OBE, CBE, JP, GCIH, Honorary Doctor of Social Sciences (2001) and donor of HKBU, on 6 March 2020. He was 100 years old.
Dr. Sales was one of the founding members of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China and he was President for more than 30 years. He helped Hong Kong retained its status as a separate sporting entity after its reunification with Mainland China, so that athletes were able to participate in international competitions under the banner of “Hong Kong, China”.
Dr. Sales was also deeply committed to sports education in Hong Kong, and he was very supportive of the undergraduate physical education programme launched by HKBU in 1992. In particular, he lent his support to the organisation of international conferences and seminars on sports education, which lifted the profile of sports education both at the University and in the community-at-large. He also established the Mrs. Edith N. de O. Sales Scholarship to award outstanding postgraduate students of our Master of Social Sciences in Sport and Leisure Management programme.
The Foundation conveys its deepest condolences to the Sales family at this time of bereavement. Dr. Sales will always be remembered for his ardent support and distinguished contributions to Hong Kong as well as the University.
