Spring of Living Water

Initiated by the Kwok Chung Bo Fun Charitable Fund, Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation, a set of artwork entitled “Spring of Living Water” was created and placed at the Entrance Plaza of the Baptist University Road Campus in 2019, with an aim to serve as an emblem of HKBU’s Christian heritage.

The “Spring of Living Water” bears the notion of “Baptism” – a ceremony at which a person who has accepted Jesus Christ submerges in water and rises again. It symbolises oneself identifying with the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, and making a commitment to serve God in his or her new life. Designed based on an abstract interpretation of light and water, this piece of artwork gives very different perceptions when it is viewed from different angles, with different amount of daylight or under different weather conditions. It consists of three parts, namely “Living Water”, “Source of Life” and “Overflowing”.

“Living Water” is a series of laminated glass, whose surfaces depict a water pattern, that perches on the top of two adjacent walls. Walking beneath it is like passing through an underwater passage.

“Source of Life”, two aluminium plates inscribed with the Bible verse “For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light” (Psalm 36:9), is installed horizontally on the external sides of the two adjacent walls. When the LED lights are on, the shadow of the verse will be projected onto the walls.

“Overflowing” refers to three solid casted glass sculptures resembling the shape of water droplets. Verses have been engraved on them. Being placed on the lawn at the Entrance Plaza, they also serve as seats for the public.
