Members of HKBU community receive honours from HKSAR Government

Fourteen members of the HKBU community were included in this year’s Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Chief Executive Honours List in recognition of their significant contributions to Hong Kong and their dedicated public and community service.

Grand Bauhinia Medal (GBM)
Dr. the Hon. Wilfred Wong Ying Wai, GBM, GBS, JP, Chairman Emeritus of the Board of Governors of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded the GBM for his distinguished public service, particularly his tremendous contributions to the development of arts and culture, and the creative industry in Hong Kong. As the Chairman of the Hong Kong Arts and Development Council (HKADC) since 2011, Dr. Wong has steered the HKADC in introducing arts spaces to meet the demand of arts practitioners, reforming the grants schemes, and bringing Hong Kong’s artists and arts groups to the international platform through cultural exchange programmes, thereby enhancing Hong Kong’s position as a cultural hub in the region. In addition, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Film Development Council since 2019, Dr. Wong is dedicated to promoting the sustained development of the local film industry and cultivating film literacy. He is currently the President and Executive Director of Sands China Limited.

Dr. the Hon. Peter Lam Kin Ngok, GBM, GBS, donor of the University, was awarded the GBM in recognition of his exemplary contributions to Hong Kong’s trade, business and tourism development. Since 2019, under Dr. Lam’s chairmanship, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) has enhanced its support to local enterprises in grasping opportunities in the Mainland and overseas. Dr. Lam is also committed to advancing the participation of the business and professional community in the Belt and Road Initiative. Amidst the outbreak of COVID-19, Dr. Lam has led the HKTDC to successfully adopt innovative and effective ways in enabling Hong Kong companies to continue doing business globally under the travelling restrictions. During his tenure as the Chairman of the Hong Kong Tourism Board from 2013 to 2019, Dr. Lam has proven success in promoting Hong Kong as a premier tourist destination. He is currently the Chairman of the Lai Sun Group.

Gold Bauhinia Star (GBS)
Dr. Lam Tai Fai, GBS, JP, Honorary Director of the HKBU Foundation and Honorary Court Member of the University, was awarded the GBS in recognition of his distinguished record of public service over the years. As the Chairman of the Council of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), Dr. Lam has been offering valuable advice and guidance to the PolyU Council and spearheading the PolyU’s expansion project in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area through the establishment of the PolyU’s Foshan campus. Besides, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Hong Kong Sports Institute, Dr. Lam has made exemplary efforts in promoting elite sports and enhancing Hong Kong’s international standing and reputation in sports. He is also the Chairman of the Lam Tai Fai Charitable Foundation, which endeavours to support education and talent development.

Professor William Leung Wing Cheung, GBS, JP, Member of the Board of Governors and Honorary President of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded the GBS in recognition of his distinguished and dedicated public service. He is currently the Chairman of the Legal Aid Services Council. Having served in the Estate Agents Authority for a total of 16 years, Professor Leung had led the Authority in enhancing the service standard and professionalism of the local estate agency trade. As the Chairman of the Task Force for the Study on Tenancy Control of Subdivided Units, Professor Leung was instrumental in steering the Task Force in successfully conducting a comprehensive study and putting forward a set of sensible recommendations, providing an important basis for the Government in enacting a new legislation to implement tenancy control on subdivided units.

Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS)
Mr. Michael Wong Yick Kam, SBS, MH, JP, donor of the University, was awarded the SBS in recognition of his dedicated service in the post-secondary education sector. Throughout his tenure as Chairman of the Council of Hong Kong Metropolitan University from 2016 to 2022, he has led the HKMU in achieving important milestones, including the university retitling, campus development and collaboration projects in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Mr. Wong is currently a Non-Executive Director of the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong.

Mr. Adam Kwok Kai Fai, SBS, Executive Director of Sun Hung Kai Properties Limited (SHKP), was awarded the SBS in recognition of his unfailing support for the Government’s policies relating to housing and land supply. In addition to lending and donating sites for the development of transitional housing and youth hostel projects, Mr. Kwok personally leads his team to help speed up the implementation of these projects. He is also devoted to helping the underprivileged and is passionate about youth development, contributing to the well-being of the community. SHKP’s charitable arm Sun Hung Kai Properties Charitable Fund Limited is a Director of the HKBU Foundation.

Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS)
Mr. Michael Hui Wah Kit, BBS, MH, JP, donor and Honorary Court Member of the University, was awarded the BBS in recognition of his notable public service. As a prominent business leader in the garment manufacturing industry, he promotes the interest of small and medium enterprises and encourages their participation in the international arena. He actively participates in the work of various advisory bodies and gives invaluable and constructive advice from an industrialist’s perspective. Mr. Hui is currently the Managing Director of Freedom Industrial Corporation Limited.

Professor Jonathan Wong Woon Chung, BBS, MH, JP, Head of the Department of Biology of the University, was awarded the BBS in recognition of his notable contributions to our sustainable development. He is instrumental in promoting food waste reduction and food wise culture in Hong Kong. He offers professional advice to ensure the smooth launching of the first large-scale organic resources recovery facility built by the Government, and establishes a local organic production and processing standard as well as a certification system.

Mr. George Lau Ka Keung, BBS, MH, JP, Honorary Court Member of the University, was awarded the BBS in recognition of his strong commitment to serving the community and notable contributions to youth development. He plays a pivotal role in securing a wide range of opportunities for young people through his commitments in supporting youth development work. During his tenure as the Chairman of the Hong Kong United Youth Association, he rendered tremendous assistance to the Government in promoting youth entrepreneurship in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Mr. Lau is currently the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Million Cities Holdings Limited.

Mr. Adrian David Li Man Kiu, BBS, JP, Co-Chief Executive of The Bank of East Asia Limited, donor of the University, was awarded the BBS in recognition of his notable achievement in charity work. Over the years, he has been actively serving in various capacities in the Community Chest of Hong Kong. He plays an important role in steering the overall work of the Community Chest as well as mapping out future development strategy. As a counsellor of the Hong Kong United Youth Association, he aims to bring together youth of different backgrounds and nurture them as future talents to contribute to the society.

Dr. Gordon Tsui Luen On, BBS, JP, Member of the Alumni Committee and Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded the BBS in recognition of his notable achievement to the promotion of quality education in Hong Kong through actively serving on various education-related advisory bodies. He has steered the development of the Quality Education Fund (QEF) over the years and endeavoured to optimise the use of the QEF for promoting quality school education in Hong Kong. He has also contributed to streamlining the operations of the QEF and greatly enhanced its efficiency. Dr. Tsui is currently the Chairman of Acer King Securities Limited.

Medal of Honour (MH)
Professor Bian Zhaoxiang, MH, Associate Vice-President (Chinese Medicine Development) of the University, was awarded the MH in recognition of his contributions to the development and regulatory affairs of Chinese Medicine.

Mr. Philip Kan Siu Lun, MH, Member of the Alumni Committee and Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded the MH in recognition of his dedicated and valuable contributions to the promotion of quality urban development in Hong Kong. He is currently the Director of Donvex Asia Capital Limited.

Chief Executive's Commendation
In addition, Ms. Stella Lee Yim Fong, JP, donor of the University, received the Chief Executive’s Commendation for Government/Public Service for her outstanding contributions to the fight against COVID-19. She is currently the Assistant Commissioner for Transport (New Territories).
