Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology celebrates its 10th anniversary and launches new book

The HKBU Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology (JAS) celebrated its 10th anniversary on 13 January 2023 with the theme “Perpetuating the Legacy of a Grand Master: A Decade of Learning and Research”. Officiating at the ceremony were Ms. Angeline Yiu, Permanent President of the Jao Studies Foundation; Dr. Simon Suen, BBS, JP, Founding President of the Development Committee of JAS; Professor Alexander Wai, JP, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU; Professor Albert Chan, JP, President Emeritus of HKBU; and Professor Chen Zhi, Director of JAS.

In his welcome address, Professor Alexander Wai said that since its establishment in 2013, JAS has spared no efforts in promoting classical Chinese studies and traditional Chinese culture, particularly the scholarly works of Professor the Hon. Jao Tsung-i, GBM, through numerous international symposiums, conferences, academic publications and research collaborations with Mainland and overseas institutions. Its notable achievements over the past 10 years are highly commendable. Professor Chen Zhi recapped in detail the accomplishments of JAS in the past decade and expressed his heartfelt appreciation to the staunch supporters of JAS over the years.

The ceremony was well attended by members of the HKBU Foundation and friends of the University. They included Professor Jao’s family members, Ms. Veronica Yiu, Dr. Tang Wai Hung, and Ms. Michelle Cheong. Other guests attending the ceremony included Ms. Annie Cheung; Mrs. Pauline Cutrupia; Mrs. Fung Sun Kwan; Dr. Winnie Ko, BBS; Dr. Elizabeth Law, MH; Mr. Barry Lam, MH; Mrs. Susan So, SBS; Mr. So Chung Ping, MH; Mrs. Mary Suen; Dr. Chloe Suen; Ms. Fanny Wong; Mr. Gabriel Yu; and Mrs. Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation.  

On the same occasion, the book launch for the first three volumes of “The Collected Works of Jao Tsung-i: Xuantang Anthology” was held. Ms. Angeline Yiu shared her pleasure in witnessing the publication of the English translations of Professor Jao’s scholarly works, and expressed her deepest gratitude to the scholars, editorial team and publishers involved. After the ceremony, the guests were accompanied by Professor Chen to tour the “Hearing from Within: An Exhibition of Calligraphy and Paintings by Professor Jao Tsung-I” and attended the dinner hosted by JAS.
