Members of HKBU community receive honours from HKSAR Government

20 members of the HKBU community were included in this year’s Honours List announced by the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in recognition of their significant contributions to Hong Kong and their dedicated public and community service.

Grand Bauhinia Medal (GBM)
The Hon. Timothy Fok Tsun Ting, GBM, GBS, JP, Chairman of the Fok Ying Tung Foundation, donor of the University, was awarded the GBM in recognition of his tremendous contributions to the development of sports in Hong Kong. Mr. Fok has been playing a leading role in the sports sector in the past decades and has provided insightful advice to the Government on a wide range of sports policy issues. Having been elected as the President of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China (SF&OC) since 1998, Mr. Fok has led the SF&OC to assist Hong Kong athletes in scaling new heights at many major international multi-sport games. In addition, with his assistance, Hong Kong had successfully co-hosted the equestrian events of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which enhanced the city’s status as the capital for major sports events.

Dr. the Hon. Sze Chi Ching, GBM, SBS, JP, Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded the GBM in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the development of Hong Kong. Dr. Sze has a long and distinguished record of public service. He is committed to uniting Fujian clansmen in Hong Kong and encouraging clansmen associations to participate in community affairs and show care and support to the community, thereby fostering social harmony and cohesion. Being a generous philanthropist, Dr. Sze has made donations to support various local charitable organisations and universities over the years. With his passion in calligraphy and as the founder of the Chinese Calligraphers’ Association (Hong Kong Branch), Dr. Sze has been devoted to connecting calligraphers in Hong Kong and nurturing young talents, demonstrating exemplary efforts in promoting calligraphy in Hong Kong and enhancing cultural exchange between Hong Kong and the Mainland. He is currently Chairman of Hang Tung Resources Holding Limited.

Gold Bauhinia Star (GBS)
Professor Herman Hu Shao Ming, GBS, JP, Honorary Director of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded the GBS in recognition of his strong commitment and exemplary contributions to serving the community over the years, in particular his dedication to the development of Hong Kong’s education sector and youth development. Apart from having served as the Chairman of the Council of the City University of Hong Kong, he established a number of non-profit making organisations to promote Chinese culture and history, as well as exchanges among the youths in the cross-strait four regions. Being a staunch supporter of Hong Kong’s sports sector, Professor Hu had served as the Chef de Mission or Deputy Chef de Mission of the Hong Kong, China Delegation to various international sports events and led Hong Kong athletes to attain remarkable achievements. He is currently Chairman of Ryoden Development Limited.

Ms. May Chan Suk Mei, GBS, JP, Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation and Honorary Court Member of the University, was awarded the GBS in recognition of her distinguished contributions to the broadcasting industry and journalism. A veteran journalist and news executive, Ms. Chan has produced a wide range of quality news and information programmes for the local audience, which are appreciated by different sectors of society, throughout the years. She also spares no efforts in raising the standard of media practitioners and promoting journalism education. Particularly in the past few years, Ms. Chan staunchly upheld her professionalism and continued to advocate fair reporting, and provided a platform for the Government to explain and elaborate on policies to the general public. She is currently Chairman of the Journalism Education Foundation.

Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS)
The Hon. Kenneth Lau Ip Keung, SBS, MH, JP, Chairman of the Heung Yee Kuk N.T., donor of the University, was awarded the SBS in recognition of his longstanding commitment and profound contributions in serving the community over the years. He is a highly respected leader and under his capable leadership, Heung Yee Kuk, as a close partner of the Government, has been duly discharging its role through discussions with the Government in resolving rural affairs and offering constructive views on the developments in the New Territories. As a member of the Executive Council and the Legislative Council, Mr. Lau has rendered sterling support to the Government and contributed significantly to the healthy executive-legislative relationship.

Dr. Allen Shi Lop Tak, SBS, MH, JP, Member of the Entrepreneur Committee of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded the SBS in recognition of his significant contributions to the development of industries in Hong Kong and community service. As a respected leader in the business community, he spares no efforts in steering the Chinese Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong to promote the development of local brands and industries. Besides, Dr. Shi has all along committed himself to serving the Wong Tai Sin District through lining up business leaders to devote resources and encourage their participation in community service. He is currently Chairman of Brilliant International Group Limited.

Ms. Yao Jue, SBS, JP, Honorary University Fellow of HKBU, was awarded the SBS in recognition of her dedication and remarkable contributions in serving the community with her musical talents over the years. She is an outstanding violinist who is committed to promoting music education and cultural exchange, as well as nurturing local music talents. Through an orchestra founded by herself, Ms. Yao has provided youths from underprivileged families with the opportunity to learn music and unleash their potential, which also helps them develop positive values and outlook to life. Ms. Yao is Founder and Artistic Director of Hong Kong String Orchestra.

Dr. Sunny Chai Ngai Chiu, SBS, JP, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, donor of the University, was awarded the SBS in recognition of his profound contributions in promoting the development of innovation and technology in Hong Kong. Serving as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Dr. Chai has greatly facilitated the development of start-ups and enterprises and played a leading role in setting up the Shenzhen branch of the Hong Kong Science Park. He has also contributed to re-industrialisation in Hong Kong through establishing the re-industrialisation guiding principles and overseeing the repositioning of Industrial Estates to InnoParks.

Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS)
Mr. Wong Kwun Keong, BBS, JP, Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded the BBS in recognition of his notable contributions to charitable activities and community affairs of Kwai Tsing District. He spares no effort in caring for the youth and provides support to students from the underprivileged families. Mr. Wong is currently Chairman of  Tai Cheong Toys Manufactory Factory.

Mr. Brian David Li Man Bun, BBS, JP, Director of The Bank of East Asia Charitable Foundation Limited, Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded the BBS in recognition of his notable public service, particularly his significant contributions to the development of business and trade in Hong Kong. As a veteran of the banking and financial services, he provides insights and offers invaluable advice to the Government amid the current turbulent economic environment. He actively participates in advisory and statutory bodies including the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Financial Services Development Council.

Dr. Daniel Yip Chung Yin, BBS, JP,  Managing Director of G.E.W. International Corporation Limited, donor of the University, was awarded the BBS in recognition of his dedicated support in the development of industries as well as innovation and technology culture. During his tenure as the Chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, he actively enhanced the cooperation between industrialists and academic institutes to foster the growth of young industrial talents and start-ups. As the Chairman of the General Support Programme Vetting Committee of Innovation and Technology Fund, he streamlined application process and facilitated longer-term planning which contributed greatly to the work of the Committee.

Mr. Ho Tak Sum, BBS, MH, President of the Shun Tak Fraternal Association in 2022-2023, donor of the University, was awarded the BBS in recognition of his notable contributions to charitable work. He is passionate about traditional Chinese religions, arts and customs, and has offered invaluable advice on Government policies to promote temple culture, life and death education, as well as arts development. He also spares no efforts in promoting education to nurture talent.

Dr. Daniel Chan Ching Yan, BBS, MH, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Lord Wilson Heritage Trust, donor of the University, was awarded the BBS in recognition of his significant contributions to charity and community services. During his tenure as the Chairman of Po Leung Kuk (PLK), he led PLK to continue to provide quality services, including rolling out youth development programmes, promoting national and civic education and providing diversified services to the elderly with a view to addressing the ageing problem.

Mr. Yeung Fun Bun, BBS, MH, donor of the University, was awarded the BBS in recognition of his notable philanthropic contributions to education, healthcare and transportation. With his efforts in local community development over the years, he persistently supported the underprivileged families, enhanced social cohesion and consolidated social stability in Hong Kong. Mr. Yeung is currently Chairman of Kam Wah Property Investment Limited.

Dr. Elizabeth Law Kar Shui, BBS, MH, Member of Board of Governors and Entrepreneur Committee of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded the BBS in recognition of her notable achievements in education development and charitable services. In order to nurture future generations with skills that suit the needs of society, she collaborates with the Government and organises a scholarship specifically for secondary students studying Applied Learning courses. She shows her benevolence in supporting healthcare development and continues to support new arrivals in Hong Kong. Dr. Law is currently Chairman of Park Hotel Property Management Limited.

Medal of Honour (MH)
Dr. Lobo Louie Hung Tak, MH, donor of the University, was awarded the MH in recognition of his contributions to the development of sports in Hong Kong, particularly in sports education and sports science. He is currently Senior Lecturer of the Department of Health and Physical Education at The Education University of Hong Kong.

Ms. Grace Yu Ho Wun, MH, Honorary Court Member of the University, was awarded the MH in recognition of her dedicated and valuable community service in Sham Shui Po District, particularly in promoting youth development. She is currently Executive Director, Greater China of Credit Suisse AG Hong Kong Branch.

Mr. Arthur Lee Kin, MH, Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation and Honorary Court Member of the University, was awarded the MH in recognition of his dedicated and valuable community service, particularly in the accounting profession. He is currently Assistant President and Company Secretary of CGN New Energy Holdings Co., Ltd.

Ms. Lam Kwan, MH, Honorary Director of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded the MH in recognition of her dedicated and valuable community service in Yuen Long District, particularly her contributions to the development of Pok Oi Hospital. She is currently Director of Great Harvest (Holdings) Limited.

Ir Professor Paul Poon Wai Yin, MH, Sponsoring Member of the HKBU Foundation and Deputy Chairman of the Council and Court of HKBU, was awarded the MH in recognition of his dedicated and valuable service to the community, particularly his contributions to the development of the higher education sector in Hong Kong. He is currently Managing Director of Poon’s Engineering Limited.
