In Memoriam: Mr. Cheng Sing Yip
The HKBU Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Mr. Cheng Sing Yip, Honorary University Fellow (2018) and Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation, on 29 August 2023 at the age of 79.
Mr. Cheng tirelessly devoted his life to education and the nurturing of talents for Hong Kong. During his more than half-century career in education, he served as the Founding Principal of Hong Kong Sze Yap Commercial and Industrial Association Wong Tai Shan Memorial College for 16 years, the Principal of Pui Ching Middle School for 12 years, as well as a supervisor or member of a number of school management committees covering both the mainstream and special schools in Hong Kong. Mr. Cheng also maintained a deep, unswerving friendship with HKBU. Not only did he generously support the University's development, but he also served as a member of the Council of the then Hong Kong Baptist College (HKBC), a member of the Council and the Court of HKBU, and Chairman of the Estates Management Committee under the HKBU Council, all in a time span of over 20 years.
Mr. Cheng’s spectacular beneficence extended to the social service sector. He was dedicated to helping the underprivileged in his capacities as a member of the Board of Directors of the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service, as well as member of the Board of Directors of Breakthrough Limited. In recognition of his distinguished contributions to the community, he was awarded the Badge of Honour by the HKSAR Government and the Badge of Honour for Distinguished Service by the British Red Cross.
The Foundation conveys its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Cheng’s family at this time of bereavement. He will always be remembered for his outstanding contributions to the University and Hong Kong.
