HKBU launches Tencent for Good Scholarship
The Tencent Charity Foundation (the Tencent Foundation) has been committed to promoting altruism and supporting people in need. During the outbreak of the fifth wave of COVID-19 in 2022, the Tencent Foundation made a HK$10 million donation towards HKBU, swiftly addressing the urgent needs of Hong Kong residents. The funds were used to support HKBU’s School of Chinese Medicine in its efforts to combat the pandemic, including the establishment of the “HKBU Chinese Medicine Team Against COVID-19”, which provided free online Chinese telemedicine consultations and treatment for COVID patients and their close contacts. The initiative was well received by the community.
As a further effort to encourage HKBU students and faculty to contribute to the society through meaningful actions after the pandemic, the Tencent Foundation expressed its wish to utilise the remaining balance of its donation, totalling HK$1.85 million, to establish the “Tencent for Good Scholarship”. For six consecutive years starting from the academic year 2023-24, scholarships of HK$20,000 each will be awarded annually to 15 eligible undergraduate students who have actively participated in community or charitable work, with an aim to motivate and inspire young people to philanthropic action, thereby promoting the culture of good deed.
Those interested in applying for the Scholarship are required to complete at least 30 hours of relevant service over the past year, and submit a video with the theme “Together we make a better world” to showcase their participation in charity work that is deemed most impactful and innovative.
Application details of the Scholarship will be announced on the webpage of the Office of Student Affairs in due course.
