Over 200 Chinese medicine representatives gather to celebrate Chinese New Year at HKBU

The School of Chinese Medicine (SCM) of HKBU held a Spring Reception on campus on 25 February 2024. The event brought together over 200 distinguished guests, including government officials, representatives from the Chinese medicine industry and academia, the University’s senior management, staff, students and alumni of SCM, to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
The event kicked off with an auspicious lion dance performance. The officiating guests, including Dr. Cheung Wai Lun, JP, Project Director (Chinese Medicine Hospital Project Office); Mr. Dominic Ho, Acting Commissioner for Chinese Medicine Development of the Health Bureau; Mr. Huen Wong, SBS, JP, Chairman of the Board of Directors of HKBU Chinese Medicine Hospital Company Limited; Professor the Hon. Chan Wing Kwong, member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong for Election Committee constituency; Dr. the Hon. Kennedy Y.H. Wong, BBS, JP, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the HKBU Foundation; Mr. Tommy Li Ying Sang, BBS, MH, JP, Chairman of the Pak Shing Tong Group, Honorary Director of the HKBU Foundation; Professor Alex Wai, JP, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU; and Professor Lyu Aiping, Vice-President (Research and Development) cum Dean of Graduate School and Acting Dean of Chinese Medicine, performed the eye-dotting and red ribbon-tying ceremonies for the lion dance to wish everyone a happy and prosperous year of the Dragon.
In his welcoming address, Professor Wai expressed his gratitude for the tremendous support from friends in various sectors. HKBU has always been at the forefront of health sciences, persistently transforming the wisdom of traditional Chinese medicine into innovative therapies and pharmaceutical products. He praised the School for its remarkable scientific achievements and hoped that SCM would continue to play an important role in the development of Chinese medicine, showcasing HKBU’s unique value and contributions to human well-being across the globe.
During the event, Mr. Dominic Ho stated that Chinese medicine services are an integral part of the healthcare system in Hong Kong. The Government will formulate a Chinese Medicine Development Blueprint, launch a Digitalised Chinese Medicines Information Platform, and promote the development of integrated Chinese and Western medicine services, in hopes of joining forces with various stakeholders in the Chinese medicine field to establish comprehensive Chinese medicine healthcare services.
Mr. Huen Wong introduced the core management team members of the Chinese Medicine Hospital. The Hospital, expected to commence its service in phases starting in late 2025, will provide high-quality clinical service to the general public and develop as the flagship in teaching and training, scientific research, multi-lateral collaborations and the creation of value for health.
In his vote of thanks, Professor Lyu said that the guests for this tea reception is impressive and thanked all sectors for their care, support and concern for the School. He reviewed SCM’s teaching and research achievements in the past year and expressed the hope that the School can integrate the theories and experience of Chinese medicine with modern biomedical, life sciences and data sciences, fostering new models for future medical development in Hong Kong.
