In Memoriam: Dr. Yip Wai Hong, SBS, MH

The HKBU Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Dr. Yip Wai Hong, SBS, MH, Honorary University Fellow (2006) of HKBU and Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation, on 16 June 2024 at the age of 94.

Dr. Yip, a renowned musician whose career spanned over six decades, was best known for his lifelong devotion to music education in Hong Kong. An esteemed member of the HKBU family, he established the Department of Music and Fine Arts (which later became the Department of Music and the present Academy of Music) in 1973 and served as its Founding Head until his retirement. During his tenure, he also served as the Dean of Arts for four years. In 1993, he was appointed as a member of the Board of Governors. He made generous donations in support of the development of the HKBU Christian Choir, Chaplain’s Office Ministries and the HKBU Development Fund.

As a distinguished composer and music educator, Dr. Yip made substantial contributions to the musical arts landscape of Hong Kong. Crowned “The Father of Children’s Choir” in Hong Kong, Dr. Yip spared no efforts in nurturing music talents. A revered figure in Hong Kong’s music education scene, Dr. Yip’s profound legacy has left an indelible mark on the community. 

The Foundation conveys its heartfelt condolences to the Yip family at this time of bereavement. Dr. Yip will always be remembered for his unwavering support for and tremendous contributions to the University and the Hong Kong community.
