Members of HKBU community receive honours from HKSAR Government

19 members of the HKBU community were included in this year’s Honours List announced by the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in recognition of their significant contributions to Hong Kong and their dedicated public and community service.

Grand Bauhinia Medal (GBM)
Professor Lee Chack Fan, GBM, GBS, JP, Chairman of the Management Board of The Jao Studies Foundation, Honorary President of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded the GBM in recognition of his exemplary contributions to the arts and cultural development in Hong Kong. He is a renowned expert in geotechnical engineering and hydropower and has taken part in many key engineering projects of the country. He is also a prominent leader in Hong Kong’s higher education sector. With ardent love for the Chinese culture, Professor Lee has been the Director of Jao Tsung-I Petite Ecole, The University of Hong Kong since 2003 and had served as the Vice-Chairman of the Board of Directors of Hong Kong Palace Museum Limited, contributing tremendously to promoting Chinese cultural heritage and heritage preservation. In addition, he was among the first batch of Board members of the West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) Authority and provided important advice on the WKCD’s master development and core facilities planning.  

Dr. Peter Lee Ka Kit, GBM, GBS, JP, Director of the Lee Shau Kee Foundation, Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded GBM in recognition of his dedicated service and tremendous contributions to the community. Dr. Lee is an eminent entrepreneur with a passion for community service over the years. Since 2017, in supporting transitional housing development, his company has, under Dr. Lee’s steer, contributed land and vacant units to provide short-term accommodation to the grassroots families in urgent need and those who have been waiting for public rental housing for years. Devoted to charity work, Dr. Lee has made substantial monetary contributions to support charitable initiatives and disaster relief work in Hong Kong and the Mainland. In addition, he supported the Government’s anti-epidemic measures by providing four separate land plots to facilitate construction of community isolation facilities. Dr. Lee also cares for youth development and provided staunch support to the Strive and Rise Programme. Dr. Lee is currently Chairman and Managing Director of Henderson Land Development Company Limited.

Gold Bauhinia Star (GBS)
Dr. Tan Siu Lin, GBS, Honorary University Fellow of HKBU and Chairman of the Tan Siu Lin Foundation, Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded GBS in recognition of his dedicated service and significant contributions to the community over the years. Dr. Tan is a successful entrepreneur and has been committed to the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Belt and Road Initiative. As a renowned philanthropist, Dr. Tan has all along supported the development of education, poverty alleviation and sports in the Mainland and Hong Kong. Through the Tan Siu Lin Foundation, he set up scholarships for various universities in Hong Kong and provided Chinese medicine consultation, volunteer services, as well as anti-epidemic supplies to people in need. Dr. Tan is currently Founder and Chairman of the Luen Thai Group.  

Dr. Samuel Yung Wing Ki, GBS, MH, JP, donor of the University, was awarded GBS in recognition of his devoted service and significant contributions to the community. With over 40 years of experience in the insurance industry, Dr. Yung is highly respected by his fellows for his commitment in promoting the development of the industry in Hong Kong through regulation of the industry, launch of the Voluntary Health Insurance Scheme, certification of insurance intermediaries’ academic qualifications, and so on. Since assuming the chairmanship of the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA) in 2018, he has actively monitored the governance and operation of the HKEAA, upheld the fairness, reliability and validity of the examinations, and also facilitated smooth conduct of the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination during the epidemic. Dr. Yung is currently Executive District Director and Honourable Advisor of AIA Hong Kong.

Mr. Robert Ng Chee Siong, GBS, donor of the University, was awarded GBS in recognition of his significant contributions and enthusiasm in serving Hong Kong. Mr. Ng is a prominent figure in real estate development and hotel businesses in Hong Kong. He took the lead in response to the Government’s appeal for the tripartite collaboration among the Government, the business sector, and the community in support of the Government’s targeted poverty alleviation initiatives. Under the Community Living Room (CLR) Programme, Mr. Ng led his group to provide venues and renovation costs for setting up the Sham Shui Po and Hung Hom CLR. Besides, he offered staunch support to the Strive and Rise Programme, benefitting many secondary students from underprivileged families. Mr. Ng is currently Chairman of the Sino Group.

Silver Bauhinia Star (SBS)
Mr. Chan Man Chau, SBS, JP, Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded SBS in recognition of his dedicated service and meritorious contributions to the North District. Over the years, he has contributed to building a harmonious and connected community through organising various celebratory events at the district level. Since 2021, he has served as the Chairman of the North District Fight Crime Committee and plays an active role in crime prevention activities. All along, Mr. Chan has devoted himself in district affairs and improvement of district governance for the benefit of the community. Mr. Chan is currently President of the Hong Kong Industrial and Commercial Association.

Mr. George Lung Chee Ming, SBS, MH, JP, Senior Executive Regional Director of Manulife (International) Limited, donor of the University, was awarded SBS in recognition of his remarkable contributions to the community. With his commitment to youth development work over the years, he has reached out to different youth groups and Mainland authorities with a view to providing the Hong Kong youth with more corporate internship opportunities in the Mainland, broadening their horizons, and enabling them to gain a better understanding of the development of our country. In addition, he has motivated the clansmen organisations to unite their natives in serving the community. 

Dr. Stanley Yim Yuk Lun, SBS, JP, Honorary Doctor of HKBU and Co-Chairman of the Entrepreneur Committee of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded SBS in recognition of his committed service and meritorious contributions to the Tsuen Wan District over the years. He is supportive in promoting community building and sponsoring the operation of the Community Care Teams. Having served as the Chairman of the Tsuen Wan District Fight Crime Committee and the Tsuen Wan District Civic Education Committee, he is determined to support the Government in safeguarding public order. Dr. Yim has also contributed to the well-being of the community through charity work. Dr. Yim is currently Chairman and Managing Director of S.A.S. Dragon Holdings Limited.

Bronze Bauhinia Star (BBS)
Mr. Henry Tong Sau Chai, BBS, MH, JP, Honorary Court Member of HKBU, was awarded BBS in recognition of his outstanding and long-standing public service. As the Chairman of the Hong Kong Council on Smoking and Health, he renders insights to the Government on tobacco control and promotion of relevant health risks. In addition, having served the Tsuen Wan District for years, he led the Yuen Yuen Institute to support community work and district building and contribute to the development of the Taoist religion. Mr. Tong is currently Managing Director of Wong Hau Plastic Works & Trading Co., Ltd.

Ms. Amy Chan Lim Chee, BBS, JP, Member of the Board of Trustees of the Elite Athletes Charitable Trust, Director of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded BBS in recognition of her significant contributions to the promotion of sports development, particularly in supporting retired athletes and helping athletes pursue education. As the Chairman of the Hong Kong Elite Athletes Association, she made dedicated efforts in enhancing the image of elite athletes and proactively encouraged members to participate in public welfare affairs and contribute to the society. 

Mr. Ricky Tsang Chi Ming, BBS, JP, President of the New Territories General Chamber of Commerce, Director of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded BBS for his devotion to the economic and social development of Hong Kong and Guangdong for decades. He has played an active role in uniting the Chinese and local merchants, and strengthening the co-operation between the commercial and industrial sector. He pays great concern to the local social problems, and has established a think tank to conduct various research projects with a view to exploring solutions for the Government. Mr. Tsang is currently Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Goldlion Holdings Limited.

Mr. Paulo Pong Kin Yee, BBS, JP, Honorary Court Member of HKBU, was awarded BBS in recognition of his dedicated commitment to a number of Government boards and committees for the development of arts and culture, tourism and film industry, particularly for the ongoing transformation of the Hong Kong Ocean Park. As the Chairman of the Campaign Committee of the Community Chest of Hong Kong, he has also implemented various innovative and influential fundraising initiatives in support of the underprivileged. Mr. Pong is Managing Director of Altaya Group International Limited. 

Dr. Elizabeth Lee, BBS, President of Hong Kong Alumni Association of Beijing Universities, donor of the University, was awarded BBS for her dedication in the promotion of exchanges between Hong Kong and Mainland talents which facilitate the better integration of Hong Kong into the national development. She is dedicated to the building of platform for cooperation and exchange between universities in Beijing and Hong Kong in various fields, in particular innovation and technology (I&T). She also contributes to various programmes to promote I&T development between the youths in Beijing and Hong Kong. Dr. Lee is currently Chairman of Golden Bridge United Financial Leasing Co., Ltd. 

Mr. Herman Wai Ho Man, BBS, former Chairman of the Tung Wah Group of Hospitals (TWGHs), Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded BBS in recognition of his significant contributions to charity and community services. During his tenure as the Chairman of the TWGHs, he was dedicated to leading TWGHs to continue to provide quality services, including bringing on further improvements to Chinese medicine services, working on youth development, strengthening youngsters’ recognition of national identity and sparing no efforts to the development of various projects such as TWGHs TungPo. 

Dr. Ma Kai Yum, BBS, Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded BBS for his long and active participation to charity work and social affairs. He cares for the youth and grassroots. He is devoted to improving the well-being of young people and raising their law-obedience awareness. He also fully supports many youth programmes organised by the Government, such as the Strive and Rise Programme. Dr. Ma is currently Chairman of Carrianna Group Holdings Company Limited.

Medal of Honour (MH)
Mr. Tsang Yiu Tong, MH, Permanent President of the Hong Kong Chinese Medicine Merchants Association, Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded MH in recognition of his dedicated and valuable community service in the Central and Western District, particularly in district work and charitable services. Mr. Tsang is currently Chairman of Man Tsuen Cheong Birdsnest Ginseng Hong.

Mrs. Mary Suen Choi To May, MH, Honorary University Fellow of HKBU and Board of Governors of the HKBU Foundation, was awarded MH in recognition of her dedicated and valuable community service in the Tsuen Wan District, particularly her contributions to the development of Yan Chai Hospital. Mrs. Suen is currently Director of the Simon Suen Foundation. 

Professor Ronald Chiu Ying Chun, MH, Honorary University Fellow and donor of the University, was awarded MH in recognition of his contributions to the development of the broadcasting industry, journalism and media education, particularly in raising journalistic standards. Professor Chiu is currently Associate Dean and Professor (Practice) of the School of Communication of The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong. 

Ms. Rosanna Choi Yi Tak, MH, Honorary University Fellow, Honorary Court Member and donor of the University, was awarded MH in recognition of her contributions to a number of Government boards and committees, particularly on the development of the higher education sector in Hong Kong. Ms. Choi is Co-Founding Partner of CW CPA.
