Professor Michael Ng appointed as Dr. Elizabeth K.S. Law Endowed Professor in Data Science
Professor Michael Ng Kwok Po, Dean of Science, Chair Professor in Mathematics and Chair Professor in Data Science at Hong Kong Baptist University, has been appointed as Dr. Elizabeth K.S. Law Endowed Professor in Data Science with effect from July 2024. With the generous donation from Dr. Elizabeth K.S. Law, BBS, MH, Chairman of Park Hotel Property Management Limited, the endowed professorship was set up to recognise scholars who have made remarkable contributions in Data Science and to promote pioneering research in the application of data analytics and artificial intelligence, both locally and worldwide.
Professor Ng has been a longtime member of the University, having served as the Department Head of Mathematics from 2014 to 2019. Subsequently, he took up the position as Chair Professor and Research Division Director for Mathematical and Statistical Science at the University of Hong Kong before rejoining HKBU in 2023.
As an internationally distinguished scholar, Professor Ng has received numerous accolades for his accomplishments in the fields of computational and applied mathematics, machine learning, and data science. He was elected as Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and was awarded the 12th Feng Kang Prize of Scientific Computing. He is among the top 1% scholars in three subject fields: Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering based on Essential Science Indicators, and has been ranked as the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists by Stanford University.
In addition, Professor Ng is enthusiastic about promoting the advancement of mathematics worldwide. In 2014 and 2018, he chaired the SIAM Conference on Imaging Science and the SIAM Conference on Applied Linear Algebra at HKBU, which were held for the first time outside the United States and Europe. Both conferences drew hundreds of researchers from Mainland China and overseas countries. He has served as nominator and award judge for various prestigious awards, such as the Kyoto Prize and the Future Science Prize. With his high reputation, Professor Ng has been invited to serve on the editorial boards of more than 15 international journals.
