HKBU hosts symposium to explore intersection of artificial intelligence and journalism

The Institute for Journalism and Society (IJS) of the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) hosted a symposium titled “When Journalism Meets AI” on 30 October 2024. The discussion featured representatives from international and local media organisations, as well as artificial intelligence (AI) experts and scholars, to explore the transformative impact of AI on the media landscape. This engaging event attracted participation from academics, industry professionals and students both online and offline.

The symposium was convened by Professor Raymond R. Wong, SBS, veteran journalist and Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation. The six keynote speakers were Ms. Wang Yi, Deputy Director of the Technology Research and Development Centre at the Communication Technology Bureau of Xinhua News Agency; Mr. Haris Amiri, Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Ground News; Ms. Echo Wai, Controller (Production Services) at Radio Television Hong Kong; Mr. Eric Wishart, Standards and Ethics Editor at Agence France-Presse; and Professor Chan King Cheung, BBS, Director of IJS and Raymond R. Wong Endowed Professor in Media Ethics.

Professor Zhong Bu, Dean of the School of Communication, and Professor Raymond Li, Head of the Department of Journalism also shared their insights with the participants.
