22 October 2024

The HKBU Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Mr. Chung Po Yang, SBS, OBE, JP, a donor of the University and Co-founder of DHL International (Asia Pacific), on 22 October 2024 at the age of 81.

Mr. Chung was a distinguished entrepreneur widely celebrated for the significant impact he made on the logistics industry in Hong Kong. He began his journey with DHL in the early 1970s when he oversaw the company’s operations in the city. In 1972, he spearheaded the establishment of DHL’s first overseas office in Hong Kong and coined the Chinese term for “courier”. His pioneering work laid down a robust foundation for courier services in Hong Kong, earning him the title of “Father of Courier”.

In 2001, Mr. Chung stepped down from his role at DHL and devoted himself to advocating for the liberal arts and service leadership education. As part of this effort, he made a generous donation in support of HKBU’s participation in the Fulbright Hong Kong General Education Programme, established to foster academic exchanges. Furthermore, he founded the Hong Kong Institute of Service Leadership and Management, which has developed courses for tertiary institutions to nurture ethical leadership virtues.

Mr. Chung actively involved himself in community service, particularly in promoting arts, culture and entrepreneurship. In pursuit of his goals, he established the Po & Helen Chung Foundation and the Creative Initiatives Foundation designed to support a wide variety of charitable initiatives. His noteworthy contributions included serving as: Chairman of the Hong Kong Arts Centre, Vice Chairman of the Ocean Park Corporation, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Management Association, and membership of both the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Hong Kong Tourism Board.

The Foundation conveys its heartfelt condolences to Mr. Chung’s family at this time of their bereavement. He will always be remembered for his exceptional contributions not only to the University but also to society at large.
