In Memoriam: Dr. Thomas Chen Tseng Tao
The HKBU Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Dr. Thomas Chen Tseng Tao, Founder of the Si Yuan Foundation and Director of the HKBU Foundation, on 5 November 2024 at the age of 99.
Dr. Chen was a prominent leader in the property sector, who co-founded Hang Lung Group with his brother, Mr. Chan Tseng Hsi. He held several key positions within the Group, including member of the Board of Directors, Managing Director, and Chairman. Beyond his business achievements, Dr. Chen dedicated himself to community service through various public service roles. As a Council member of multiple higher education institutions in Hong Kong and the Mainland, he significantly advanced the cause of higher education.
Dr. Chen was widely recognised for his generosity and benevolence. In 1997, he established the Si Yuan Foundation, embodying the philanthropic principle of “maintaining gratitude for the source of benefit”. Through the Foundation, he provided critical support to underprivileged students in local tertiary institutions, as well as primary and secondary schools across the country. HKBU is grateful to have received generous donations from the Si Yuan Foundation, which supported the University’s development and participation in international conferences.
The Foundation conveys its heartfelt condolences to Dr. Chen’s family at this time of bereavement. He will always be remembered for his invaluable contributions not only to the University but also to Hong Kong and the Nation.
