HKBU confers honorary doctoral degrees upon five distinguished individuals

Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) conferred honorary doctoral degrees upon five distinguished individuals in recognition of their outstanding professional accomplishments and remarkable contributions to society at the Commencement and Honorary Doctoral Degree Conferment Ceremony held on 18 November 2024.

The Ceremony was presided over by Dr. Clement Chen, GBS, JP, Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU. Professor Michael Batty, Dr. the Hon. Bernard Charnwut Chan, GBM, GBS, JP, and Dr. Yang Yang received the degree of Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa; Dr. the Hon. Ronnie C. Chan, GBM, was bestowed the degree of Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa; and Professor Tan Weihong was conferred the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa. Dr. Bernard Charnwut Chan is the Chairman and President of Asia Financial Group, which is a Senior Member of the HKBU Foundation. On behalf of the honorary doctoral degree recipients, Dr. Yang Yang gave a vote of thanks at the Ceremony, and expressed their appreciation to HKBU for bestowing the honours upon them.

Speaking at the Ceremony, Professor Alex Wai, JP, President and Vice-Chancellor of HKBU, praised the five honorary doctoral degree recipients who have led remarkable lives and inspired many through their exceptional achievements. “Their respect is earned not only from their talent and dedication, but also through their steadfast commitment to their passions, despite the challenges they faced. We can all draw inspiration from their successes,” he said.

A number of Foundation members and friends of the University attended this joyous occasion to extend their warmest congratulations to the recipients. They were Dr. David Mong, Professor Ng Ching Fai, GBS, Dr. Roy Chung, GBS, JP and Professor Frank H. Fu, BBS, MH, JP. HKBU representatives including Ir Professor Paul Poon, MH, Deputy Chairman, and Mr. Kevin Liem, Treasurer of the Council and the Court, as well as the University’s senior management team, deans and heads also joined the Ceremony.
