The award ceremony for the “A Legacy Across Lingnan: Jao Tsung-I in the Greater Bay Area Student Competition”, jointly organised by the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), the Jao Tsung-I Petite École at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the University of Macau, was held at HKBU on 30 November 2024.

Among the officiating guests were Professor Lee Chack Fan, GBM, GBS, JP, Director of the Jao Tsung-I Petite École at HKU; Mr. Paul Pang, Dean of Students at the University of Macau; Ms. Angeline Yiu, Permanent President of The Jao Studies Foundation; Dr. Simon Suen, BBS, JP, Founding President of the Jao Tsung-I Petite École Fan Club; Mr. Alberto Lei, Dr. Winnie Ko, BBS JP, and Mr. Tony Yue, BBS JP, Presidents of the Jao Tsung-I Petite École Fan Club; Mrs. Mary Suen, MH, Honorary Director of the Mr. Simon Suen and Mrs. Mary Suen Sino-Humanitas Institute at HKBU; Dr. Chloe Suen, Chair of the Simon Suen Foundation; Professor Martin Wong, Provost of HKBU; Dr. Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) of HKBU; Professor Chen Zhi, Director of the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology at HKBU; and Professor Zhang Hongsheng, Director of the Mr. Simon Suen and Mrs. Mary Suen Sino-Humanitas Institute at HKBU.

They were joined by various members of the HKBU community, including Dr. Thomas Tang and Ms. Michelle Cheong, family members of Professor Jao Tsung-I; Professor Timothy Wong, Director of the Academy of Chinese, History, Religion and Philosophy; and Mrs. Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation.

The competition engaged a total of 130 teachers and students from secondary schools and tertiary institutions across Hong Kong and Macau. Its aim was to encourage young people to delve into traditional Chinese culture, particularly the academic and artistic accomplishments of Professor Jao Tsung-I, thereby promoting educational, cultural and artistic exchanges in the Greater Bay Area. Submissions were divided into two categories: Article/Dissertation Submissions and Creative Artistic Works. They featured a diverse array of formats, such as essays, music videos, calligraphy, paintings, digital illustrations, scripts, novels, and handicrafts, all exploring Professor Jao’s significant contributions in different regions of the Greater Bay Area from multiple perspectives, while also showcasing the participants’ boundless creativity and imagination.
