In Memoriam: Dr. the Hon. Lee Shau Kee, GBM

The HKBU Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Dr. the Hon. Lee Shau Kee, GBM, Honorary Doctor of Business Administration (2011) of HKBU and Honorary Permanent President of the Foundation, on 17 March 2025. He was 97 years old.
Dr. Lee was a highly respected business leader whose vision and exemplary conduct touched the hearts of many and left an indelible mark on the world. As the founder of Henderson Land Development Company Limited, he was a pioneer in Hong Kong’s real estate and property development sectors, celebrated for his “people-oriented” leadership. With unmatched business intuition, Dr. Lee expanded his ventures into diverse industries, including hotels, tourism, public utilities and healthcare, significantly contributing to Hong Kong’s economic prosperity.
Equally remarkable was Dr. Lee’s life-long dedication to philanthropy. Through the Lee Shau Kee Foundation and the Hong Kong Pei Hua Education Foundation, he championed numerous charitable causes in areas such as education, technology, medical services and social welfare. His substantial donations to universities and tertiary institutions in Hong Kong, Mainland China and abroad have tremendously advanced higher education and talent development, benefitting countless students. In recognition of his extraordinary achievements and contributions, Dr. Lee was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal by the HKSAR Government in 2007.
Dr. Lee was a long-time supporter of HKBU, generously funding various meaningful initiatives since 1983. Notably, he made a mega gift of HK$100 million in 2019 in support of the University’s strategic development, particularly in its research cluster of creative media and practice.
The Foundation conveys its deepest condolences to Dr. Lee’s family at this time of bereavement. Dr. Lee will always be remembered for his distinguished contributions to the University, Hong Kong and the Nation.
