Madam So Chau Yim Ping Student Exchange Scholarship broadens students’ horizons
The late Madam So Chau Yim Ping, BBS, JP made a generous donation of HK$1 million to HKBU in 2015 for the establishment of the Madam So Chau Yim Ping Student Exchange Scholarship. This initiative empowers HKBU students to explore the world and broaden their global perspectives.
Over the past decade, the scholarship has supported outstanding students in joining international exchange and learning programmes. A notable example was an online learning project jointly organised from 2017 to 2020 by HKBU and two other local universities. This project brought together more than 300 students from 17 universities across Asia and Europe. Using online platforms, participants communicated in European languages such as French and German and achieved fruitful results from engaging in meaningful discussions on global issues.
These valuable global learning experiences have not only deepened students’ understanding of diverse cultures but also expanded their professional networks and enhanced their academic and career development. As one PhD student beneficiary remarked, “The insights and connections I gained during this period have been instrumental in shaping my research trajectory and will continue to influence my work for years to come.” This heartfelt reflection fully demonstrates the profound impact that Madam So’s visionary dedication has had on education.
Madam So’s philanthropic support for HKBU began in 1976 and spanned more than 40 years, during which time she backed a variety of campus development projects and student exchange programmes. Her service in the 1990s as a Court member also contributed significantly to the University’s advancement.
On the 10th anniversary of the Madam So Chau Yim Ping Student Exchange Scholarship, the HKBU Foundation wishes to express its sincere gratitude to Madam So. Her benevolent legacy will continue to inspire and enrich the HKBU community for generations to come.
