Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) recently received a generous donation of HK$300,000 from renowned entrepreneur and artist Dr. Una Tang, made through Golden Affluence Limited, to establish the “Cantonese Opera Arts Promotional Scheme”. This two-year initiative will support the School of Continuing Education (SCE) in promoting Cantonese opera via its newly launched short course, “Cantonese Opera Workshops: Mastering Cultural Context and Vocal Skills”. Its aims are to encourage public engagement with Cantonese opera, to deepen understanding of Chinese culture and traditional theatre arts, and to contribute to the preservation of this valuable intangible cultural heritage.

Under the supervision of Mrs. Fanny Hau, Founder and Chairman of The HeArt Touch Charity Foundation and Honorary Director of the HKBU Foundation, the short course covers the historical background, evolution, and cultural significance of Cantonese opera, and offers training in basic vocal techniques. Through the promotional scheme, Dr. Tang hopes to reignite community passion and support for local traditional culture, enabling people of all ages and backgrounds to access, study, and appreciate Cantonese opera, thereby injecting new vitality into the transmission of this art form.

HKBU extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Una Tang for her generosity. SCE remains committed to fostering the intergenerational inheritance of cultural heritage, nurturing culturally literate talents with artistic flair, and advancing the sustainable development of traditional arts in Hong Kong.
