Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) held a recognition ceremony on 23 October 2026 to express its deep gratitude to alumnus Mr. Ben Lam Tsz Pan, Founder and Chief Operating Officer of The Horus Consultant Company Limited, and his wife, Ms. Jade Lam Wai Han, for their generous donation to establish the “Oneness Foundation Fund”. The Fund will provide scholarships to encourage and support HKBU students in pursuing academic excellence and cultivating a caring spirit towards the community.

At the ceremony, Dr. Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) of HKBU, and Mrs. Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation, presented a memento to Mr. and Mrs. Lam and their son, in appreciation of the couple’s benevolence.

In his address, Mr. Lam shared the inspiration behind the Fund. Referring to the concept of “agency” developed by Indian economist and Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences Amartya Sen, Mr. Lam pointed out that human well-being cannot be determined solely by material and economic indicators. “The core purpose of establishing the Oneness Foundation Fund with my wife is to enhance the ‘agency’ of students, empowering them with the motivation and capability to pursue a value-driven life, and to realise their ideals in society,” he said.

He concluded by sharing a philosophical quote by Indian poet and thinker Rabindranath Tagore to inspire the audience: “Live your life as a light, Because you don’t know, Who by thy light, Out of the darkness.”

The ceremony was well-attended by distinguished guests, including Dr. Jeff Sze Chun Fai, JP, Under Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government; Dr. Lew Mon Hung, former member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference; and Sai Kung District Councillors Mr. Chan Kai Wai, MH, Mr. Chris Cheung Mei Hung, and Mr. Alex Lam Chun Ka. Other HKBU representatives included Dr. Rosa Tang, Deputy Director of Student Affairs, and Professor Baldwin Wong, Assistant Professor of the Department of Religion and Philosophy.

Mr. Lam graduated from the Department of Journalism in the School of Communication and was a recipient of the School’s second “Chang Kuo-sin Award for Aspiring Young Communicators”. He has remained a steadfast supporter of his alma mater over the years. In 2016, he established the “Intellectual Scholarship for Outstanding Performance” to reward Communication students who demonstrate both academic excellence and a strong sense of social responsibility. The establishment of the “Oneness Foundation Fund” marks another significant contribution by Mr. Lam to the long-term development of the University. He is currently recognised as Director of the HKBU Foundation.
