In Memoriam: Mr. Wong Kam Fai

06 December 2015

The HKBU Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Mr. Wong Kam Fai, BBS, MH, founder of the Kum Shing Group, which is the Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation, and the first Honorary University Fellow (2006) of HKBU, on 6 December 2015. He was 97 years old.

Mr. Wong had an impressive record of public service and had been at the helm of numerous community and charitable organisations. In recognition of his contributions to society, he was awarded the Medal of Honour and Bronze Bauhinia Star by the Hong Kong SAR Government in 2002 and 2007 respectively.

The founder of the Kum Shing WKF Charity and Education Foundation, Mr. Wong was a dedicated philanthropist who contributed significantly to the promotion of education and public welfare. Deeply committed to advancing education in the region, he initiated a project to sponsor the construction of 100 schools for children in remote and impoverished areas across Mainland China and it was completed in 2006. The national authorities honoured him with the title of “Messenger of Love”.

Mr. Wong was a staunch supporter of HKBU. The HKBU Affiliated School of Wong Kam Fai Secondary and Primary School was named after Mr. Wong in recognition of his generous donation towards the school’s establishment. He also provided funding to HKBU’s Department of Education Studies in support of the setting up of a web-based e-learning platform to help secondary students who studied at home during the SARS outbreak in 2003.

The Foundation conveys its heartfelt condolences to the Wong family at this time of bereavement. Mr. Wong will always be remembered for his distinguished contributions to education both in Hong Kong and on the Mainland as well as his unswerving support for the development of the University.
