In Memoriam: Mr. Lau Wong Fat

The HKBU Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Mr. Lau Wong Fat, GBM, GBS, JP, Former Chairman of Heung Yee Kuk N.T., donor of the University, and Honorary President of New Territories General Chamber of Commerce, Director of the HKBU Foundation, on 23 July 2017. He was 86 years old. 

Mr. Lau dedicated his entire life to servicing the New Territories and led the Heung Yee Kuk for 35 years, making profound contributions in rural developments and in the improvement of the livelihood of rural residents. Apart from chairing the Heung Yee Kuk, he held several key positions in public service such as serving as Member of the Executive Council and Legislative Council, as well as Chairman of the Tuen Mun District Council and the Tuen Mun Rural Committee. He made tremendous contriubtions towards the promotion of Hong Kong’s development. Mr. Lau was awarded the Grand Bauhinia Medal by the HKSAR Government in 2005.

During his tenure as Chairman of the Heung Yee Kuk, a generous donation was made to the University in support of the publication of a book entitled “A History of the Heung Yee Kuk N.T.” by the Advanced Institute for Contemporary China Studies.

The Foundation conveys its deepest condolences to his family. Mr. Lau will always be remembered for his distinguished contributions to the betterment of Hong Kong, as well as his unswerving support for the University.
