HKBU receives donation in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of Department of History

The University recently received a generous donation of HK$125,000 from Professor Robin D.S. Yates, Visiting University Fellow of the Department of History and his wife Professor Grace S. Fong, Visiting Professor of the School of Chinese of The University of Hong Kong. The donation is designated for the establishment of the “Department of History 40th Anniversary Scholarship: Professor Robin D S Yates and Professor Grace S Fong Scholarship” in celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the Department of History. Professors Yates and Fong both come from McGill University, Canada. Professor Yates is James McGill Professor of the Department of East Asian Studies, while Professor Fong is Professor of Chinese Literature in the Department of East Asian Studies.

In recognition of the donors’ generous support, the Department of History hosted a lunch in honour of Professor Yates and his wife at the University Lounge on 11 January 2018. During the lunch, Professor Clara Ho, Head of the Department of History, and Mrs. Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation received the donation cheque from the couple on behalf of the University. The staff and students of the Department also joined the lunch.

Starting from 2018, the above Scholarship will be given to a student majoring in any programme offered by the Department of History who meets the following requirements: Having achieved the best academic results (according to CGPA) in his/her second semester of the third year of undergraduate studies, and having taken the greatest number of course units in Asian and Canadian History.
