In Memoriam: Mrs. So Chau Yim Ping

26 January 2018

The HKBU Foundation records with deepest sorrow the passing of Mrs. So Chau Yim Ping, BBS, JP, Member of the Court (1995–1998, 1999– 2001) and Honorary University Fellow (2015) of HKBU, as well as Honorary Trustee of the HKBU Foundation, on 26 January 2018. She was 91 years old.

Mrs. So is an outstanding entrepreneur. She founded the New Island Printing Company Limited in 1964, which has evolved from a humble establishment of five members into a publicly listed company, employing over thousands of employees. She was awarded the “Distinguished Printers Award” by The Hong Kong Printers Association in 2009 in appreciation of her spectacular achievements in the printing industry.

Mrs. So had an impressive record of public service and had been at the helm of numerous community and charitable organisations. She was appointed Member of the Southern District in 1985 and was elected to the Legislative Council in 1988. In recognition of her long and outstanding community and public services, Mrs. So was appointed Justice of the Peace in 1988 and was awarded the Bronze Bauhinia Star by the HKSAR Government in 2001.

A staunch and much valued supporter of HKBU, Mrs. So made her first donation to the University as early as 1976.  In the past four decades, she had made generous donation in support of various endeavours of the University, including campus development fund and the setting up of exchange scholarships. The University also received the full benefit from the wise counsel given by Mrs. So in her capacity as Member of the Board of the then Hong Kong Baptist College, and then Member of the Court of HKBU from 1995 to 1998 and from 1999 to 2001.

The Foundation conveys its heartfelt condolences to the So family at this time of bereavement.  Mrs. So will always be remembered for her zealous support and significant contributions to the University’s development.
