In Memoriam: Dr. the Hon. Chan Sui Kau

The HKBU Foundation records with deep sadness and sorrow the passing of Dr. the Hon. Chan Sui Kau, GBM, GBS, OBE, JP, Honorary University Fellow (2008) of HKBU and Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation, on 27 March 2018. He was 93 years old.

A prominent industrial leader and a visionary philanthropist, Dr. Chan was the Honorary Chairman and Executive Director of Yangtzekiang Garment Limited. He was highly respected for his longstanding and substantial contributions to the overall development of the textile and clothing industries over the past decades. He was Chairman of the Clothing Industry Training Authority of Hong Kong, and Chairman and Honorary Chairman of the Textile Council of Hong Kong. He was awarded the Gold Bauhinia Star in 2002 and the Grand Bauhinia Medal in 2008 by the HKSAR Government.

Dr. Chan was active in social and public services. He has made generous contributions to medical institutes, schools and universities in the Mainland and Hong Kong, including to HKBU. He supported HKBU’s Chinese Medicine, Contemporary China Studies, the Hong Kong History Project, and the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology. The School of Continuing Education Tower located on Baptist University Road Campus was named after Madam Chan Wu Wan Kwai in recognition of the generous support from the Chan Family Charities Trust in support of the University’s development.

The Foundation conveys its deepest condolences to Dr. Chan’s family at this time of bereavement. Dr. Chan will always be remembered for his ardent support and distinguished contributions to the University.
