HKBU · ASHWORTH Golf Day 2023 - 20th Anniversary Charity Cup attracted over 210 participants

“HKBU · ASHWORTH Golf Day 2023 - HKBU Golf Day 20th Anniversary Charity Cup” was held with great success on 1 December 2023 at the Eden Course of The Hong Kong Golf Club in Fanling. This annual signature event has been sponsored by the Chan Yin Chuen Memorial Charitable Foundation through the internationally-renowned clothing brand ASHWORTH for four consecutive years. ASHWORTH also sponsored the event’s golf shirts for the third year. Thanks to the zealous support from all parties, a total of HK$2.45 million was raised to support the University’s strategic development, particularly the provision of funds for students to participate in the “Extended Study Programme in the Greater Bay Area (GBA)”, which aims to enhance their understanding of the development opportunities in the GBA and boost their employability. 

The origin of the HKBU Golf Day dates back to 2001, when a group of Council members and staff members organised an intramural golf match to bid farewell to Dr. Daniel Tse, GBS, CBE, JP, President Emeritus of HKBU. In 2004, the first Golf Day was held with unprecedented success under the leadership of then Council member Dr. Ronald Lu. Since then, the event has become an annual event of HKBU with the goal of broadening the University’s social network. It has raised over HK$34.5 million to date. 

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the HKBU Golf Day, the 90-year-old President Emeritus and his wife Mrs. Kitty Tse came all the way from Macau to join the event. Officiating at the cheque presentation ceremony cum ceremonial tee-off were Mr. Peter Chan, representative of the Chan Yin Chuen Memorial Charitable Foundation and ASHWORTH; Mr. Allan Kwong, President and Chief Executive of Regal Holdings Corporation and the Event’s Venue sponsor; Mr. Daniel O’Neill, Director of Golf of The Hong Kong Golf Club; Dr. and Mrs. Daniel Tse; Dr. Ronald Lu, Co-Chairman of the event’s Organising Committee; Ir Professor Paul Poon, MH, Deputy Chairman of the Council and the Court of HKBU; Professor Alexander Wai, JP, President and Vice-Chancellor; Professor Martin Wong, Provost; Dr. Albert Chau, Vice-President (Teaching and Learning) and Acting Dean of Arts; Professor Rick Wong, Chair Professor of Department of Chemistry; and Mrs. Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement at HKBU and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation. 

The event attracted over 210 participants, and 153 of them formed 38 teams to take part in the tournament, including industry leaders such as Dr. Edgar Cheng, GBS, JP, Member of the Board of Governors of Our Hong Kong Foundation; Professor Cliff Sun, BBS, JP, Honorary President of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries; Dr. Stanley Yim, BBS, JP, Chairman and Managing Director of S.A.S. Dragon Holdings Limited; Mrs. Mary Suen, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Yan Chai Hospital; Dr. Yip Kit Chuen, Chairman of G.E.W. International Corporation Limited; Dr. Maggie Ko, President of Hang Fung Garment Group Limited; Dr. Edward Chan, MH, Founder and Managing Director of German Pool (Hong Kong) Limited; Mr. Huen Wong, SBS, JP, Chairperson of the Board of Directors of HKBU Chinese Medicine Hospital Company Limited; Mr. Alan Mak, screenwriter and director of the Infernal Affairs film series; as well as HKBU staff, students and alumni. 

At the prize presentation ceremony cum dinner held that evening, Professor Alexander Wai delivered a speech to express his heartfelt appreciation to the sponsors of the event, particularly the Chan Yin Chuen Memorial Charitable Foundation and ASHWORTH as well as Regal Holdings Corporation for being the Title Sponsor and Venue Sponsor. He also thanked members of the Organising Committee for their unswerving dedication and contributions, which enabled the continuation of HKBU Golf Day over the years. 

Furthermore, souvenirs were presented to Dr. Ronald Lu and Mr. Allan Kwong in recognition of their staunch support for the event over the past 20 and 15 years. The atmosphere was continually electrified as the dinner was interspersed with fine wine auction and lucky draw sessions.
