The 3rd HKBU Professional Journalism Fellowship to open for applications in February 2024
Established by veteran journalist Professor Raymond R. Wong, SBS, Honorary Permanent President of the HKBU Foundation, the HKBU Professional Journalism Fellowship (PJF@HKBU) Scheme has been successfully held for two terms since its launch in 2022. The 3rd PJF@HKBU Scheme will start calling for applications from February 2024.
Recently, the School of Communication and the Department of Journalism of HKBU hosted a media luncheon to give a briefing on the Scheme’s latest developments at the Sha Tin Clubhouse of The Hong Kong Jockey Club, which was well-attended by heads and representatives from 16 media organisations in Hong Kong.
The briefing started with Professor Wong's introduction to the history and purpose of the PJF@HKBU. He expressed his gratitude to the media organisations for their continued and generous support to the Scheme. Professor Raymond Li, Head of the Department of Journalism, on the occasion called for participation in the programme, with the view that it would benefit not only the industry, but also HKBU students and faculty members through interactions with the fellows. At the same time, Professor Chan King Cheung, BBS, Raymond. R. Wong Endowed Professor in Media Ethics, briefed the attendees on the eligibility and selection criteria of the Scheme.
Of the four veteran journalists who were named fellows of the 2nd PJF@HKBU, three of them have completed their studies. They are Mr. Wu Jiangchuan, BBC News Chinese Senior Broadcast Journalist and Editor; Mr. Arthur Hung Kam Fat, Managing Editor (International News) of Ming Pao; and Mr. Victor Lee Wai Tat, Assistant Managing Editor of TVB News & Information Services Division. All of them shared the same view that they had benefited greatly in terms of professional and personal growth after enrolling in various subjects for a semester at HKBU. Another fellow, Mr. Alec Chan Tze Ling, Greater Bay Area Desk Bureau Correspondent of Ming Pao, will soon begin his on-campus study for four months in the upcoming semester.
The two selected fellows for the 1st PJF@HKBU, Ms. Denise Tsang and Ms. Laura Zhou, Hong Kong news editor and senior China reporter respectively from the South China Morning Post, also attended the luncheon. They both highlighted that they had an unforgettable time during their studies at HKBU, where they acquired new knowledge that is applicable in practice and relevant to the job.
PJF@HKBU was established with the support of the Dorothy Shen Wong Memorial Fund, which was founded by Professor Raymond R. Wong. As the first-of-its-kind fellowship in Hong Kong, PJF@HKBU aims to raise the standards of journalism by allowing practising journalists to take a break for continuing education. More details are available on the Scheme’s website.
