The University recently received a generous donation of HK$1 million from Mrs. Helen Yu, wife of Professor Timothy Yu who was the founder of the Department of Communication (currently School of Communication). The donation was designated for the establishment of the Timothy Yu Communication Education Fund in support of the teaching and research development of the School so as to reinforce its academic leadership in the field. In recognition of the donor’s generosity, the Ceremony for the Establishment of the Timothy Yu Communication Education Fund officiated by Mr. Joseph Yu, elder son of Mrs. Helen Yu, Mr. Cheng Yan Kee, BBS, JP, Chairman of the Council and the Court, Professor Rick Wong, Acting President and Vice-Chancellor, and Professor Huang Yu, Associate Vice-President and Dean of Communication, was held on 4 July 2015.
During the ceremony, Mr. Cheng Yan Kee extended his heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Helen Yu for her generosity. He expected that the School of Communication could continue to nurture professional communication talent for the community with the establishment of the Fund. He also took the opportunity to express his appreciation to the late Professor Timothy Yu for his tremendous contribution to HKBU and Communication education. In his speech, Professor Rick Wong said that the School of Communication has been developing progressively and cultivating generations of outstanding talent over the past fifty years. The University takes great pride in the School’s accomplishments. He hoped that Communication alumni would render their support to the Fund so that it could play a more influential role in Communication education.
The ceremony was well attended by distinguished guests, including Mrs. Joseph Yu; Mr. and Mrs. John Yu, younger son and daughter-in-law of Mrs. Helen Yu; Mr. Raymond Wong, SBS, Honorary University Fellow and Distinguished Fellow of the School of Communication of HKBU, and Mrs. Wong; Professor Kenneth Leung, Master of Shiu Pong College of The University of Macau, and Mrs. Andrea Leung; Professor Li Kedong, Director of the Research Institute of Educational Technology of South China Normal University; Rev. Timothy Lau, Chairman of the Rock House Foundation; Professor Yan Lifeng, Deputy Dean of the School of Journalism & Communication, and Professor Zhuang Hongming, Head of the Department of Journalism of Xiamen University; Professor Frank Fu, MH, JP, Associate Vice-President and Secretary-General of the HKBU Foundation; Mrs. Lily Chan, Director of University Advancement; as well as staff, students, alumni and friends of HKBU.
The Timothy Yu Communication Education Fund was initiated by Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Mok and has received ardent support from individuals including Dr. Daniel Tse, GBS, JP, Ms. Leonie Ki, SBS, JP and Mr. Walter Cheung.
