Inaugural Lecture by Professor Cheah Kok Wai, Dr. Elizabeth K.S. Law Endowed Chair of Advanced Materials

In recognition of the generous support of Dr. Elizabeth K.S. Law, MH, Chairman of Park Hotel Property Management Limited, for the establishment of “Dr. Elizabeth K.S. Law Endowed Chair of Advanced Materials”, and in celebration of the conferment of this title on Professor Cheah Kok Wai, an Inaugural Lecture delivered by Professor Cheah on “Materials to Produce and Control Light” was held on 5 March 2018.

Officiated by Mr. Cheng Yan Kee, BBS, JP, Chairman of the Council and the Court and Professor Roland T. Chin, President and Vice-Chancellor, the lecture was well attended by over 180 guests, including community leaders, University’s supporters, the general public as well as members of the Council and the Court, staff, students and alumni of HKBU.

In  his welcoming remarks, Professor Chin expressed his deepest gratitude to Dr. Law for her distinguished contributions and staunch support to the University over the years. Dr. Law is currently a member of the Board of Governors and the Entrepreneur Committee of the HKBU Foundation. In addition, she has generously donated towards the University in support of the establishment of the Jao Tsung-I Academy of Sinology Development Fund and the Mainland Students Scholarship Fund.

Professor Chin also praised Professor Cheah for his dedicated efforts in advancing research in the field of advanced materials. Professor Cheah is an internationally recognised scholar. Among his most notable works is the invention of ArmoGlass, an ultra-hard anti-scratch sapphire cover for touchscreen devices, which won him many accolades.

Following an introduction to the academic achievements and contributions of Professor Cheah by Professor Michel A. Van Hove, Head of the Department of Physics, Professor Cheah delivered his inaugural lecture on the production and control of light, from invention to application and commercialisation. The enlightening lecture aroused keen interest and sparked enthusiastic exchanges of views among participants during the Q&A session.
